Our Hospital Stay

Although our delivery was full of excitement, I am happy to report that our 4 nights in the hospital were low-key and uneventful.  We had visits from many wonderful family and friends, and the staff took great care of us.  The bruise on Charlotte's hip was almost gone by the time we left, and the abrasion continued to look better every day.  Given that she was preterm, being breastfed, and had the large hip bruise, the pediatrician warned us that there was a good chance she would need to be under bili lights for jaundice.  While she definitely got jaundiced, her bilirubin levels were good and she never needed the lights.  I will post some of our more tasteful pictures, but for those brave souls interested in true "play-by-play" imagery, such as photos of Charlotte's first meconium stool (complements of Brandon), they are available.

Resting in a real outfit ... we had no clothes small enough to fit her (after all - Brandon and I were both 9 pound babies, so we had not bought anything smaller than 0-3 months!) and the nursing staff had suggested we put her in real clothes as opposed to the hospital t-shirt and diaper to help keep her body temperature up.  The body temperature issue would continue to rear its ugly head throughout our stay!

First manicure ... her 4D ultrasound, in which she clawed her face and attempted to poke her eyeballs out, proved to be accurate in predicting one of her favorite activities on the outside!

Shortly after this photo was taken, the nurse came in to do a final assessment on Charlotte ... and her temperature was too low to send her home!  This was the last thing I wanted to hear after days of temperature issues and threats to send her to the NICU, so I promptly burst into tears.  The nurse said she would come back in 30 minutes to recheck it.  We bundled her in everything we could find, and thankfully it came up enough for us to go home.
